Travel insurance for older travellers in the UK: which insurers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode recommend

We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode 12 questions older UK travellers ask about travel insurance: pre-existing conditions, cover over 80, cruises, long stays in Spain. The answers name 31 insurers and guides. Three specialists lead, and consumer guides shape the answers more than the counts first suggest.

Staysure, AllClear and Saga lead

Staysure is named in 25 of the 36 answers, and first in 18. AllClear follows with 23 and Saga with 19. Post Office is next with 11, then Avanti with 9. The questions were written from Staysure's offer (see the method), which helps it; the order of the others is the more telling result.

ChatGPT favours Saga, which it names in 10 of its 12 answers, against 5 for Gemini and 4 for Google AI Mode. On complex heart conditions or a cancer history, all three models put AllClear first. On long stays for pensioners in Spain, all three put Staysure first, and AllClear is in all three answers too.

Guides are read more than they are named

Which? is named in 10 answers, 8 of them from ChatGPT, usually for a Best Buy rating or a score given to a policy. Comparison sites and consumer guides are named in 18 of the 36 answers in all.

MoneySavingExpert is named once and cited in 15 answers, which makes it the third site cited, ahead of saga.co.uk. which.co.uk is cited in 10 and moneysupermarket.com in 6. Their rankings reach the reader through the answer, often without their name.

When the question does not say UK

Most of the 12 questions do not mention the UK, and on two of them Gemini answers with American insurers: the best provider for travellers over 70 with pre-existing conditions, and the top single trip policy for an active senior. It names WorldTrips, Seven Corners, Aegis and Tin Leg on the first, and IMG, Seven Corners, Faye and battleface on the second. These are questions a UK traveller could well type. ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answer both with UK insurers.

Models share the top, not the rest

ChatGPT names 4.5 insurers or guides per answer, Gemini 4.2 and Google AI Mode 3.8. Nine of the 31 names come from all three models. Nationwide, whose current accounts include travel cover, is named mainly by Google AI Mode, in 3 answers of its 4. Insurancewith is named only by ChatGPT.

staysure.co.uk is the website cited most, in 21 answers, then allcleartravel.co.uk in 19, moneysavingexpert.com in 15 and saga.co.uk in 14. postoffice.co.uk, avantitravelinsurance.co.uk and which.co.uk follow. ChatGPT cites the most, with 6.8 sites per answer, against 4.5 for Google AI Mode and 3.2 for Gemini.

What this means for travel insurers

• Specific conditions are decided by specific pages. The answers on heart conditions, cancer and long stays name those who describe these cases directly.
• Scores travel. A Which? rating or a percentage score is repeated in the answers. Independent ratings and how they are shown on a site both count.
• Money guides are a route in. MoneySavingExpert shapes many answers it is hardly named in. Appearing in its guides can matter as much as being on a comparison site.
• Say where you sell. A question without a country can go to another market altogether. Pages that say clearly who they cover, and from where, give assistants what they need.

Method

12 questions in English, written from the offer of one insurer, Staysure, across medical conditions, age limits, cruises, family holidays, winter sports and long stays. Each question was asked once to ChatGPT (with web search), Gemini and Google AI Mode, for the UK market, on October 27, 2026: 36 answers. We looked in each answer for 46 insurers, comparison sites and guides (names and common spellings), counted the answers naming each, their position among those names in the answer, and the websites cited. Age UK and Age Co count as one name.

This is a snapshot: three models, one day and 12 questions. AI answers vary from one session to the next, so a difference of one or two answers between two names is not significant. Because the questions start from one insurer's strengths, they favour it and specialists like it; they do not measure the whole market. This study reports what AI assistants say. It is not insurance advice, and it does not rate any policy.
