Team wiki software in the US: which tools ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode recommend

We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode 12 questions software teams ask when they choose an internal wiki: self-hosting, Markdown, Slack, fast search, replacing shared drives. The answers name 27 tools. Notion and Outline lead overall, but the list depends on what the team asks for: hosting and developer docs each bring their own names.

33 of 36answers name a hosted wiki or docs tool
24 of 36answers name an open-source wiki or docs tool
19 of 36answers name Notion, the hosted wiki or docs tool named most

Notion and Outline lead, with little between them

Notion is named in 19 of the 36 answers and Outline in 18. Confluence follows with 14, Slite with 12 and Slab with 10. Outline is named first most often, in 6 answers. The questions were written from Outline's offer (see the method), which helps it; the order of the others is the more telling result.

The plainer questions show the everyday shortlist. To replace cluttered shared drives, Slab, Nuclino and Notion are named by all three models. For a 50-person startup that needs fast search, all three name Notion and Slite.

Ask about self-hosting and the list changes

On the 4 questions about self-hosting, open source and data ownership, Wiki.js is named in all 12 answers, BookStack in 11, XWiki in 9 and Outline in 8. Docmost follows with 6. Notion, the name mentioned most overall, is in 4 of the 12, and Slite and Slab are in none of them.

A CTO asking for full data ownership gets Wiki.js and BookStack from all three models. These tools are named for what they are: free to host, with access controls. A hosted tool can be strong everywhere else and still miss these answers.

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, October 28, 2026. One answer can name several open-source wikis and docs tools.

Developer docs and AI agents have their own winners

On developer documentation with Markdown and API access, Mintlify, Docusaurus and ReadMe are named by all three models, and Mintlify is first in all three. These names barely appear on questions about company wikis: this is a separate category, and the answers treat it that way.

The question about Model Context Protocol and AI agents is narrow and still decided: Outline is named by all three models, and Obsidian by Gemini and Google AI Mode.

The models agree on a core, then split

Gemini names 5.7 tools per answer, Google AI Mode 5.1 and ChatGPT 4.6. Seventeen of the 27 tools are named by all three. The differences sit in the leaders: Confluence is named in 7 of Gemini's 12 answers and 2 of ChatGPT's, and Notion in 9 of Gemini's and 4 of ChatGPT's. GitBook goes the other way, with 5 answers from ChatGPT and 1 from Google AI Mode.

The vendors' own sites are the sources

slite.com is the website cited most, in 9 answers, then docmost.com in 7. getoutline.com, github.com and mintlify.com follow with 6 each. ChatGPT cites the most, with 8.1 sites per answer, against 3.8 for Google AI Mode and 2.7 for Gemini. Docmost is named in 8 answers and cited in 7: for a smaller tool, its own pages carry much of the visibility.

What this means for wiki and documentation tools

  • Self-hosting is its own market. The self-hosting answers go to open-source names. A tool that offers it needs pages that say so plainly, with the license and the deployment options.
  • Each use case has a shortlist. Company wiki, self-hosted wiki and developer docs produce three different lists. Being known in one does not carry into the next.
  • Vendor pages are read. Vendors' own sites dominate the citations. A clear page on how a tool compares for a given team is a page an assistant can use.
  • New criteria are open. On AI agent support, only a few tools are named. A specific capability, documented early, can win a question before the category fills up.

Method

12 questions in English, written from the offer of one vendor, Outline, across internal wikis, self-hosting, Markdown, developer documentation and AI agents. Each question was asked once to ChatGPT (with web search), Gemini and Google AI Mode, for the US market, on October 28, 2026: 36 answers. We looked in each answer for 37 tools (names and common spellings), counted the answers naming each, their position among those names in the answer, and the websites cited.

This is a snapshot: three models, one day and 12 questions. AI answers vary from one session to the next, so a difference of one or two answers between two names is not significant. Because the questions start from one vendor's strengths, they favour it and tools like it; they do not measure the whole wiki market.
